The Dog Show: The Art of Our Canine Companions
Through December 14, 2014

We attended this wonderful show at the Morris Museum celebrating dogs in art (19th c to present) with a focus on British and American artists. This exhibition examines works of art in which the dog is the main subject: the exhibit shows the performance of hounds and sporting dogs working in the field. The show features both new and old pure bred pet portraits in their domestic environments.

Our resident appraiser, Jane St. Lifer Kennedy of St. Lifer Art, Inc. has loaned the museum this painting (below) of the Bedlington Terrier for the exhibit. It has been in her family for decades.

The Bedlington (pictured) was only 14 months old and owned by Mr and Mrs William Rockefeller. He was not yet a champion and quite the unknown when he took Best in Show over the show favorite. It was the first time in the 17 year history that a Bedlington won. He went on to win Best in Show at Westminster and at Morris and Essex in 1948.

There are original oil paintings, works on paper, bronze sculptures, decorative art, trophies, and canine accessories. Over 100 works will be displayed that capture the talent and diversity of canine artists, and also showcase the many breeds that are recognized in America and England, ranging from sporting hounds to pampered pooches. William Secord, a recognized expert on dog painting, has served as an advisor for the show. For further information, please visit www.dogpainting.com.
